Show Title: Body Workers

Name of Guests: Nikki Stair, Ryan Hallford, and Rusty Crum

What are the basic points Nikki Stair wants listeners to remember:

  1. Massage increases relaxation.
  2. It detoxifies the body and can raise or lower blood pressure depending on what is needed.
  3. It can be used as a rehabilitation tool or as a pre or post surgical procedure.
  4. Range of motion can also be increased from massage.
  5. There are so many different types of body work. All massage is body work but not all body work is massage.
  6. When looking for a masseuse, look at the background of potential therapists. Not every massage therapist meets the needs of every client. What may be good for one person might not work for other people. You need to find the right fit.
  7. Find a therapist who is trained in the type of massage you are looking for.
  8. Clients need to figure out what they want out of the body work session. They can’t get what they want if they don’t know what it is they want.
  9. Availability of therapists also needs to be taken into consideration.
  10. The quality and experience of the therapist is very important. Experience goes a long way.
  11. Most people do not see the therapeutic value of massage. They see it as a luxury not a necessity.
  12. There is not enough value placed on massage.
  13. I work with both traditional as well as alternative Doctors.
  14. I work with Doctors who establish a diagnosis then we come up with a treatment plan that I execute.
  15. I work with orthopedic Surgeons and Chiropractors.
  16. When I work with surgical patients, I can increase their recovery time, reduce their pain and reduce the scar tissue that develops after the surgery.
  17. Most people are scared of what they don’t know. They don’t realize that each massage is based upon each individual needs ands personal history.
  18. I don’t jump in blind. I take a medical history so that I know as much as I can about each client. After each session, I also write down what occurred.
  19. Skin is the primary organ for respiration so I am very careful what products I apply. I don’t use products with mineral oil or Lanolin.

What are the basic points Ryan Hallford wants listeners to remember:

  1. Craniosacral has a gentle touch which is appealing to many people.
  2. Craniosacral is a gentle form of body work to optimize the flow of fluid in the body.
  3. The therapist places their hands on the patient's head, feet, or tailbone while fully clothed.
  4. These three body parts are the primary areas we cover.
  5. Craniosacral work helps people find resolution to emotional problems.
  6. It also strengthens the emotional awareness in the body and helps all types of ailments.
  7. It is a variable some people I have seen for years bit some people one time.
  8. Normally treatment occurs once a week, until I see progress then we fade it out.
  9. Patients vary in need; some want to maintain themselves, be checked to make sure their fluids are distributed, flow and are balanced.
  10. Craniosacral work was founded in the turn of the century and the principals behind Craniosacral work are ancient.
  11. What is primarily practiced now was inspired by a Osteopathic Dr. at the turn of the century.
  12. It can be traced as far back as Hindu teachings/early Buddhist teachings.
  13. A session runs an hour to an hour and a half.
  14. If someone is looking for a therapist, they should look for someone who just does cranial work with at least 750 hours of training.
  15. Sometimes practitioners take a two-day course and then practice which I feel is not sufficient.

What are the basic points Rusty Crum wants listeners to remember:

  1. Rolfing is a form of connective tissue manipulation that works to balance the body in gravity.
  2. Rolfing is a manual stretching using fingers and knuckles to stretch, compress and manipulate the connective tissue.
  3. I find the areas of shortened and compressed tissue and physically lengthen it.
  4. Anyone can be Rolfed. Typical clients are people who suffer from chronic pain and people who are looking to enhance and improve upon their body (ie: dancers, riders and athletes).
  5. People need to know about Rolfing as an option.
  6. I come across people who have no idea what it is and the people who know, think it is painful.
  7. It is highly effective and transforming, without necessarily being painful. People don’t need to be afraid of it.
  8. When looking for a Rolfer, make sure that they are certified and that you choose someone you feel safe and comfortable with.
  9. Trust is very important between a Rolfer and client, so when choosing someone, make sure you trust them.
  10. The nature of the work is an active process. You are engaged so you must connect with the Rolfer.
