  3. You might see self-medication, radical isolation, acting out sexually or aggressively.
  4. My book on depression put the research I found, out there, in a different way.

  9. The success rate treating male depression is up around 90%. 1 in 5 people suffering get help.
  10. People must get treatment. Depression doesn't get better by itself.
  11. I want to empower women to be proactive in insisting and helping the men in their lives, get the help they need.
  12. When dealing with the men in your lives you feel are suffering from depression, your first step is to express your concern, in a respectful and firm way.
  13. Do your best to help your partner sees how they are specifically exhibiting depression. Help them see it.
  14. Give them specific examples of their behavior. You want to look in a book or at a web site that has a self-test for depression.

  16. If you have a wife and kids you owe it to them to get help, so no one pays the price.
  17. Explain to them that not feeling as well as they should, is a burden on the family.
  18. Facilitate them getting in front of a professional.
  19. The cliché, "he has to want to do it for himself", is false. He has to be willing to do whatever he needs to do to get help.
  20. Do whatever is necessary for them to get help. Push them through the initial resistance.
  21. Go as far as scheduling the appointment for them.
  22. Most men who get treated are wife-mandated referrals.
  23. If you are going to do an intervention with a depressed man, get the women in their lives involved.
  24. My message to women is you have the right and obligation to insist on health in your family.
  25. If the man refuses, the next step is to say you may not think you have a problem, but explain that you think he does. Tell him that both of you need to see a couples therapist, make the appointment, and demand that he attends.
  26. Screen the professional prior to meeting with them, so you know they will back you up.
  27. When you get in front of the professional, let them know why you think your partner is depressed.
  28. It is almost a scandal how many women drag their depressed men in front of a professional and the professional does not back them up.
